Wine, Alcopops and Life – A Discussion of Under Age Drinking

Alcohol is becoming more and more readily available to people of all ages. While it used to be only adults who had easy access to alcopops and wine, teenagers and even some children are finding it increasingly easy to get their hands on drink if they so choose. This has meant that more people have started drinking from a younger age, and drink has become an essential part of their lives. I know people who can’t go more then a day or two without a bottle of wine or some sort of liquor, they’ve been doing it for so long they can’t imagine life without it. In my opinion this isn’t good. When these people have children and those kids see how much their parents drink, they’re also going to think it’s the norm and be more likely to go down the same path as they grow up. There’s also the issue of drinking when it does come to them having children, if they carry on drinking during the pregnancy this can and will effect the baby (But that’s a bigger and whole other discussion for another day).

So it raises the question, when is the right age to start drinking? Every country has their own legal ages, but for many English speaking countries the age is 18. While there are some exceptions to the rule (If you’re with a responsible adult for example you can have a small amount of alcohol) this is the age you have to be to drink in a public place or to buy wine. But is that age actually helping or hindering the issue of under age drinking? By making the legal age so high, some people may argue that the age limit is encouraging teenagers to get alcohol in any way they can and consume it in an unsupervised area. That means they’re got drink and no limits, a dangerous situation to be in. If however they were allowed to drink it in a pub, their house or other place where there will be more responsible people who could advise them, they may not get into over drinking. They may also be less inclined to drink as much, as the prices in venues they could go to would be more expensive.

This alone wouldn’t be the only part of the solution however (Though the suggestion above wouldn’t defiantly be a solution), raising awareness to kids and teens growing up would also have to be done. Some people don’t think about the damage they’re doing to their bodies, instead thinking it’s cool to lose control and be hung over the next morning. It is after all a talking point, and some people think of it as something to do.

I personally think changing kid’s and teen’s mentality about alcohol is the way to combat much anti social drinking, just don’t ban it. As you probably know from your younger days, you always want what you can’t have.

In the aftermath of the Iranian revolution, rare-gem dealer Isaac Amin is arrested, wrongly accused of being a spy. Terrified by his disappearance, his family must reconcile a new world of cruelty and chaos with the collapse of everything they have known.

As Isaac navigates the tedium and terrors of prison, forging tenuous trusts, his wife feverishly searches for him, suspecting, all the while, that their once-trusted housekeeper has turned on them and is now acting as an informer. And as his daughter, in a childlike attempt to stop the wave of baseless arrests, engages in illicit activities, his son, sent to New York before the rise of the Ayatollahs, struggles to find happiness even as he realizes that his family may soon be forced to embark on a journey of incalculable danger.

A page-turning literary debut, The Septembers of Shiraz simmers with questions of identity, alienation, and love, not simply for a spouse or a child, but for all the intangible sights and smells of the place we call home.

Home Wine Making Industry Turned Upside Down

(PRWEB) January 20, 2008

People have been making wine for years, but never in history has there been a method to make wine in the fastest way possible, and that is in just four days. “Fermentation, or wine making, used to take weeks, four weeks at least, but with the Home Booze Kit, it only takes four days,” explains the creator of the “Home Booze Method” and the inventor of the “Home Booze Kit,” June Beezy.

According to June, “As people or as humans, once we discover what works, we tend to forget that it is possible to make that certain thing even better or improve the entire process. I mean if it ain't broke, why fix it, right? But that is exactly where I put my imagination to use, and now you can turn any juice into a delicious alcoholic beverage in just a few days.”

The Home Booze Kit is a simple home wine making kit that enables anyone to turn their favorite juice into a delicious alcoholic beverage — not just limited to wine, which can be made simply by using a grape juice of your choice. “I really wanted to know that what I developed would help everyday people, so I decided to sell it on ebay, and the feedback has been phenomenal,” explains Mr. Beezy.

With no extra wine making equipment or wine making supplies to purchase, the home booze kit seems to be a very groundbreaking invention. The Home Booze Kit is set at a very affordable rate and promises a different way of fermentation and tons of savings to the end user. Not to forget the health factor, as no preservatives are used except those contained in the juice you use to create your favorite alcoholic beverage.

“My goal is for people to save money and still have fun on their weekends without having to empty pockets on the next Monday,” chuckles the creator of the Home Booze Kit. The Home Booze Kit seems like a revolutionary introduction to the rather slow, easy going and quiet wine making industry. If you have ever been interested in making homemade wine from juice, the Home Booze Kit can help you get started. The home wine making genre is growing by leaps and bounds every year as people discover how easy and affordable it is.

Making Wine – It’s Easy to Do at Home

Many folks enjoy a glass of wine when socializing, during dinner or just to unwind after a long hard day. Knowing that obtaining your favorite red or white is as easy as a trip to the local beverage store, why would you not take advantage of the convenience? why would you ever want to make your own wine?

First of all it can be just plain fun because it isn’t hard and once you’ve made a couple batches you can start to get creative. also, you would be surprised at how good of a wine you can make, probably better than you ever imagined. and finally, if you love to save a buck, then all you need to know is you can make quality homemade wine for as little as 2 or 3 dollars a bottle (after your initial equipment purchase) for those who have never homebrewed, getting started can be a little overwhelming, but don’t worry, there are ways to make you brew

Wine Making Equipment Kits Save the Day

This is where it all starts for the beginner. Buying a wine making equipment kit gives you all the essential materials and equipment you’ll need during the wine making process from equipment sterilization, to mixing, fermenting, measuring, and clarifying to the final bottling and corking process. Kits can run between $95 for a basic kit to $130 for a deluxe kit and they include everything except wine bottles and an ingredient kit. Wine bottles can be purchased, but you can just as easily re-use wine bottles from commercial wines as long as they don’t have a screw top and these bottles originally came with a cork in them. In fact, if you ask a couple friends to save some bottles for you, before you know it you’ll have more than enough.

Selecting a Wine Ingredient Kit

The wine ingredient kit contains the juice which is basically a concentrated form of the grape’s juice, already strained, processed and ready to go. The more expensive kits contain juice that is less concentrated and thus they require less water in the process, but even the wine you can make from the least expensive ingredient kits (around $68) is really, really good. The ingredient kit also contains some packets of ingredients you’ll use along the way such as the yeast and items to start fermentation, stop fermentation and help clarify the wine. some kits also contain oak chips or sweetener packs to get the appropriate flavor.

If you have made it this far then you probably have tried enough wines to know what types you like whether white, red, dry or sweet. I would suggest that you pick a wine that you know you’ll like for your first kit. Armed with your wine making equipment kit and your wine ingredient kit you are now ready to make your first 6 gallon batch of wine, which is approximately 30 bottles of wine.

Wine Making Steps

Here is a summary of the basic steps for making wine. your ingredient kit will have more detailed and specific instructions for your particular kit and that is what you should follow. each step requires that you sanitize your equipment, buckets, hoses etc. essentially anything that comes in contact with the wine in order to prevent bacteria and eventual spoilage. The sanitizer comes in your kit as a powder and is mixed with warm water.

  • Mixing of concentrated wine juice and water along with bentonite, which is used to help activate the yeast. The mixture needs to be at a temperature between 65-75 Degrees F. Yeast is sprinkled on top and fermenting bucket lid is secured with airlock. Place bucket in an area with a temperature between 65-75 degrees F.
  • After 5-7 days the wine will be fermented as determined by a reading with the hydrometer included with your wine making equipment kit. at this time the wine is transferred into a glass carboy and an airlock is attached.
  • After 10 days and another hydrometer check you will then add two ingredients, one that stops any further fermentation and one that aids in the clarification process. The wine is stirred vigorously for a few minutes after adding these ingredients. your carboy is topped up within 2 inches of the top with water at this point as well and the airlock is put back into place.
  • After 14 more days you check your wine for clarity and if it is completely clear it is ready to bottle. if it is not clear, you let it sit for another week.
  • It is now time to bottle your equipment kit includes the bottling spout and corker. make sure your bottles are clean and each one sanitized before bottling. When you get close to the bottom of the carboy there will be sediment that will get sucked up and cloud your last bottle. When I start getting close to this point I siphon the last bottle’s worth into a carafe and then use that to drink first. The cloudiness will not hurt you, but you don’t want to bottle it like that.

The entire wine making process takes four to five weeks depending on the ingredient kit that you purchase. there is a myth that you must let the wine age before drinking any, but I have found you can drink some right away, especially the whites. Letting the wine age does give it more body and it brings out some flavors that you may not notice right away, and this is particularly true of the red wines, but don’t be afraid to try it right away, you deserve it

NY wineries want feds to speed up bottle labeling

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) Wineries in New York complained Friday that the federal government is hurting their business by taking too long to approve new labels for wine bottles.

Sen. Charles Schumer headed to two wineries in New York’s Finger Lakes on Friday to press the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau to clear what he called a bureaucratic logjam.

“This wine labeling backlog has far too many New York wineries over a barrel,” Schumer, a Democrat, said during a stop at Giancarelli Brothers Winery in Weedsport, west of Syracuse.

Dozens of New York’s 300-plus wineries have been grumbling of late that getting approval for new labels is sometimes taking months instead of days, said Jim Trezise, president of the New York Wine & Grape Foundation, a trade group.

“Label approvals have slowed a great deal because of staff cutbacks” at the trade bureau, Trezise said. “It has generally been a responsive agency for the wine industry, but delays have gotten longer and that does affect the distribution and cash flow for the wineries.”

Calls to the agency in Washington D.C. were not immediately returned Friday.

Wineries cannot sell a product without a certificate of label approval. Getting a label approved by mail typically took a week and an online system pared the process to a day or two. Since last fall, however, approval of online applications has frequently slowed to at least a month and paper applications take two to three months, wine operators say.

“Often, when wineries finally do receive feedback, it is with a rejected label and the necessary corrections,” Schumer said. “And, at that point, labels must be resubmitted and the (approval) process must begin again.”

In a letter to the bureau’s administrator, John Manfreda, Schumer urged the agency to work with the wine industry to find ways to streamline the application process.

“Every day that a label is delayed costs the winery in delayed or lost sales and thus reduces the amount of federal excise tax collected on those wine sales,” Schumer wrote.

Used Wine Refrigerator – The Perfect Wine Cooler Option

Most popular wines need to be stored under certain conditions to maintain the original aroma and flavor of the wine. High temperature or humidity can cause wine to lose it’s original state which is why many of us wine enthusiasts turn to wine refrigerators or coolers.

. but sometimes they can be quite expensive which is why used wine refrigerators can be a great option.

Just like when buying anything second hand, when you consider buying used wine refrigerators there are a few things to consider.

Sometimes the word ‘used’ creates visions of the appliance being old but in most cases the fridges offer are in brand new condition. like other home appliances, a wine refrigerator doesn’t get moved around so it’s less likely to suffer wear and tear.

A used wine refrigerator will be much cheaper than a brand new one. Even if it’s in brand new condition, the fact that you will be the second owner means the price will be lower. The value will differ depending on the model, the number of racks, the size of the cooler etc.

Most sellers of used or second hand wine refrigerators are private owners. this usually means that the price will be significantly lower than the retail price. There’s usually a large selection to choose from because many people like to upgrade to newer models or they want a bigger size.

There are websites and online auctions where you can browse through the latest deals available. You might also find one in your local newspaper and classified ads.
