Grape skin extract has now taken the world by storm due to its healing properties. Wine has been derived from the skin, seeds and juice. The skin can now also be of value in that it is used to make grape skin extract. The purest form of grape skin extract hails from the outer layer of the grape that should be red.
More than 6000 years ago, the Egyptians included grapes as part of the daily intake of food. Greek people promoted the health benefits of grapes especially when drank in the form of wine. Natives in Europe created an ointment from grapes in order to soothe skin and eye irritations. Hemorrhoids, bleeding and pain were successfully treated and healed with grape leaves. Sufferers of sore throats would ingest unripe grapes. Dried grapes in the form of raisins relieved constipation. Hosts of other medical conditions have also been the beneficiaries of this power food. These include: cancer, liver and kidney conditions and some types of skin disorders.
Way back in 1535 the medicinal benefits of this extract were stumbled upon by sailors on a boat that was led by Jacques Cartier en route to Canada. As was the case at the time, scurvy was all the rage for people out at sea. This disease arises due to poor nutrition and affects the connective tissues. Most sailors at the time lived on biscuits and dried meats and no other type of vitamins. They used to drink a tea that was derived from the bark of a pine tree. It was later thought that there was a powerful antioxidant in this mixture called oligomeric proanthocanidins. (OPC).
Many hundreds of years ago in the 1930′s vitamin C or ascorbic acid were credited with treating and curing scurvy. Most vegetables and fruits are host to vitamin C.
Later it was revealed that OPC’s in a concentrated form were an active ingredient of grape skin. The strength of the OPC was related to the darkness of the skin.
Essential nonbioflavonoid polyphenols are found in Resveratrol. Resveratrol is a plant based enzyme and in peanuts, grapes and pines, with grapes having the most concentrated form. Crushing the grapes when making wine increases the resveratrol levels immensely.
Resveratrol produces higher anti inflammatory effects than the chemical based Indomethacin and Phenylbutazone anti inflammatory drugs. Studies done on animals revealed that acute and chronic phases were restricted when taking this.
Research suggests that resveratrol is more effective at thinning the blood than aspirin. This has resulted in resveratrol being used to prevent heart attacks.
Animal studies have revealed that the advance of cancer can be prevented where resveratrol has been used. It ceases the rate of tumor growth and reverts cells that are pre-cancerous back to a normal state. Carcinogens are abruptly halted.
It is not known what dosages of resveratrol are needed in order for humans to get results from this enzyme. There is no doubt though, in the medical fraternity that ingesting this will retard or prevent the onset of condition such as: visual disturbance, aging, bruising, inflammation and myocardial infarction and other diseases of the heart.
